Who are we?

History of Spain Ltd

It all began in 1921 when Gaetano Tassitano, Italian of origin, and his wife Antoinette Pretty decided, after a difficult route from Italy to La Tuque, to start their business. Times were not easy back then but with hard work, their small general store prospered.

It was in 1943, in the midst of World War II, that Vincent Tassitano said "Spain" joined the company weakened by the great depression and the war. At that time the store was approximately 15,000 sq. ft. and continued to prosper as a general store.

In 1974, the store offered a wide variety of merchandise such as ladies', men's, and children's clothing, toys, yard goods, carpets, linoleum, footwear, kitchenwear.  Vincent Spain nad his brother, who were partners in the company, decided to sell their clothing operations to keep only those in the furniture, appliances, mattresses and electronics, thus reducing sales surface to 8,000 sq. ft.

Jean Spain, son of Vincent Spain joined the company in 1984.  In 1994, they made a first transformation. In 2001, seven years later, they made another major transformation. They bought an additional surface of 16,000 sq. ft. with the storefront on Commerciale Street, the main road of the city. They carried out major transactions by purchasing a competitor in computing, a building adjacent to them, and they undertook a considerable transformation of the facade and store interior. They completed their action plan by integrating the Accent Home Furnishings network.

In 2023, history was made when Jean Spain sold the entire business and building to a young Latuquois couple, Philippe Boulianne and Marie-Claude Desbiens. Not a member of the Spain family, Jean nonetheless recognizes the strong family values that remind him of his own, as well as their desire to perpetuate their tradition of excellence...

Today, we are proud to offer the customers of Haut St-Maurice, a modern environment, a larger choice of merchandise, and this, in a competitive environment of more than 20,000 sq. ft. surface. We have furniture, appliances, mattresses and decorative accessories in an up to date and ahead of time décor.
